Part 10 of the “Get to Work” Series
As a coach, I see it every day. I see players who have talent, players who have access to every resource, and players who have the potential to be great. What separates the ones who reach that potential from those who do not is simple, OWNERSHIP. The drive must come from the athlete. I cannot want it more than they do.
Coaches can teach mechanics, correct mistakes, and provide guidance. We can offer lessons, drills, and advice. But the fire, the commitment, and the willingness to improve, that belongs to the player. When an athlete steps into the cage or onto the field with purpose, consistency, and discipline, the work of a coach becomes refinement rather than repair. That is when growth accelerates.
The athletes who embrace the grind inspire everyone around them. Teammates rise to match their effort. Coaches trust them. Games become easier because they are prepared for the challenges. The culture of a team can shift simply because one or two players refuse to settle for mediocrity.
But it starts with choice. Every day, every rep, every swing is a decision. Will you commit to improvement, or will you allow distractions, comfort, or excuses to take over? The tools are there. The instruction is available. The time is yours. What you do with it defines your path.
To the young athlete reading this, recognize your power, your habits, your focus, and your work ethic shape your career more than anything else. The path will not be easy. You will face setbacks, plateaus, and moments that test your patience and persistence. Those moments are inevitable. How you respond is up to you.
The call to action is simple, SHOW UP. Put in the work, even when no one is watching. Train with purpose. Stay consistent. Embrace discomfort. Balance effort with recovery. Respect the process, and let it guide you.
Success in baseball is not guaranteed, but it is earned. It is earned by the player who makes the daily choice to improve, who refuses to settle, and who turns the grind into a habit.
Your opportunity is now. Your career is shaped by the decisions you make today, not the talent you were born with. Do not wait for motivation. Do not rely on luck. Take control.
Get to work.
